Listen: Cru — King Monday

Cru reminds me of the tightly wound emotional electronic pop of Nights Out-era Metronomy. The insistent lo-fi indie-house feel and pace here creates a rapid pulse beneath King Monday’s hurt and vulnerable vocal performance. Over the course of the song, this ultimately giving way to a lush bluesy, shimmering guitar and a bit-crunched synth breakdown. It feels chaotic and stress-inducing but also warm and familiar.

King Monday is the project of London-based electronic music producer Sherwyn Appadu. Drawing on eclectic experience, Appadu’s exposure to music includes involvement in various choirs, bands and ensembles, with an extended stint in his teens within a local rock band MK III. Following MK III’s break-up, Sherwyn moved into production and began experimenting with the software tools FL Studio and Ableton, ultimately leading to the electronic sounds on display here.
