EP Review: Victory - ATTS

November 24, 2014 in ep review, review

The latest release from Days Of Being Wild is something of a curveball, representing a departure from their usual sound to something a little more disco orientated... But being a fan of disco and those with catholic taste I can't help but love them all the more for releasing this!

ATTS is an East London based music producer and the promoter of regular club night Oonst. Victory is hard to resist, towing a near-perfect line between the classy disco samples, house keys and an understated sensibility. There is quite a lot going on here - strings surface and swirl, guitars scratch away gently in the background and the bass encircles the whole thing like a massive bear hug. The original is refined yet unapologetically upfront.

Three remixes feature... Marcus Marr strips things back to create a taught, percussive with lots of low-end bass. Kalidasas turns in two remixes... The feedback dub is as you would expect a full of heavy reggae vibes, lots of low-end and a fair amount of reverb... It is also fairly divorced from the original. The dub version from Kalidasas is more balanced but still very distinct from the original, full of acid patterns and bass.

Finally the additional track Opal is tucked in amongst Victory's remixes almost as if it is attempting to avoid causing offence. It is a stripped back piece of minimal house, full of the same heart and soul that makes Victory great. It is hard not to suspect ATTS deserves a better home when the original is so much better than the mixes here... Where the originals have sass and sophistication the remixes feel flat and lifeless, and it feels like an odd choice to place them here. Still, all credit to Days Of Being Wild - the originals make this a worthwhile release, and the remixes don't detract from these so much as feel less significant.

Victory is out now on Days of Being Wild. Order from Amazon.co.uk on MP3 [affiliate link] or check out David Altweger's unofficial video on a radio edit below.

Video experiment i made in response to my friend ATTS's new tune Victory. All nature footage is taken from BBC's magnificent series Planet Earth
