Are You Having Fun Yet

Lads Prayer

Stream: Lads Prayer - Are You Having Fun Yet

May 26, 2018 in stream

Having already received praise in their homeland of Norway, Are You Having Fun Yet are poised to receive much wider attention.

In line with the release of their eponymously titled debut album, Are You Having Fun Yet have unveiled Lads Prayer, a new song taken from that album. The sound here is akin to the Beach Boys gone shoe gaze. Vocal harmonies combine with persistent, dreamlike melodies to create a sound that feels like surfing on memories.

The album Are You Having Fun Yet was record at Taakeheimen Lydrike by Morten Øby (The Lionheart Brothers, PRTLVX). It is out now via Koke Plate.

Words

Stream: Words - Seaker

May 25, 2018 in stream

Words is the new single from musician Seaker, a haunting and spectral piece of music about the complexity of emotion that comes with being truly connected to another person.

Seaker, real name Kiran Hungan, grew up in North East England but with an experience that differed from what was regarded typical at the time. With an Indian father and English mother, Kiran’s upbringing featured a varied sensory experience taking in different tastes and sounds.

With her music, Hungan has looked to bring the layered and complex experience of her upbringing to bear. The result is a sound that is soft yet strong, timid yet dramatic and sad yet hopeful. Talking in advance of this release Hungan described her musical motivation as follows:

“I try to make music that is epic and delicate at the same time. I love those spine-tingly moments when there’s an unexpected emotional twist in a song or a tiny whispered vocal moves into a huge layered block of sound. When I was a kid, it was sad, vast, filmic songs that always got me. I think for a long time I associated art with sadness and only took something seriously in an artistic sense if it was melancholic. I think that shows still in how I write, though I also feel very full of hope and wonder... so it’s not all doom and gloom.”

Words itself captures the feeling of a connection deep and complex enough that it is never as simple as one thing - instead it is multifaceted and indescribable. A form of love that refuses to be pinned down or crystalised or held constant. Sometimes you can only know something through the direct experience of it. Again, in Kiran’s own words:

“Words is a song about the ins and outs of love, so you might call it a love song, sort of. It's about how emotions fall outside of boxes and also the vast and confusing depths of emotion we're capable of feeling when we're really connected to someone. It's also about hoping you're enough for someone you really love, and trying to explain how you feel, but the words never seem to say enough.”

Still

Stream: Still - Lyves

May 23, 2018 in stream

Long time BlackPlastic.co.uk favourite, Lyves is back with another slice of dramatic soul.

Following a stint supporting Coldplay on their European tour and her 2017 EP Like Water, Lyves is back with new project Eight Rooms. For 2018 the musician, real name Francesca Bergami, is focused on releasing eight new songs over an eight month period. Each song is to be combined with a video from a different director with the aim of exploring human emotion as told through personal narratives.

Describing the series, Francesca says:

“My intent for this series is to unravel emotions that are so often buried. Many of the emotions are representative of healing, and in turn, growing. By bringing them to light, I hope to illustrate how interconnected we are as humans and how universal emotions can be, no matter how different they may seem on the surface.”

The first entry in this series is Still, written by Francesca and produced by JNTHN Stein, and it is exactly the sort of beautiful record fans of the artist will be familiar with. Lyves’ vocals soar over a restrained musical palate that culminates in a beautiful chorus.

Be In Love / Years

Stream: Be In Love / Years - BAYNK

May 18, 2018 in stream

Following on from his debut Someone’s EP last autumn, Be In Love / Years is a new double A-side out today from New Zealand artist BAYNK.

BAYNK specialises in creating sensual textures and layering electronic elements together to creative emotive music that blends technology with humanity. Both tracks on this new release capture a sense of wonder and emotional vulnerability.

The first track, Be In Love, features a lovely rhythmic robotic feel - clicks, something like a brief blast of brass, an electronic pop. None of it can be placed - it is like the percussive motion of this track is part found sounds, part electronically generated. On this clean and crisp feeling layer we get melancholic piano, intense synth melodies and gentle vocals. It’s complex yet instantly catchy.

Years is similar, but features the gentle embrace of softly layered keyboards, vocal samples and a warm feeling bass line beneath BAYNK’s hushed falsetto. Densely layered, the track still manages to retain a sense of lightness - the flash of a half-remembered memory, or a brief moment of a emotional clarity before your day clouds everything out.

LOWWS

Stream: LOWWS - Mushroom People

May 12, 2018 in stream

LOWWS represents something of a departure for Mushroom People, who had previously tended towards the melancholic.

Standing for “Lights on when we sleep”, LOWWS is a gently swaying song in praise of your partner - the person who will help when things don’t go quite the way you planned.

There is a buoyant summer feel to this record in the snap of the drum track, the gentle melodies and the vocal harmonies. The band also threw a lot in here - a sample of a cat and a radio announcement in Korean, spoken by one of the band member’s roommates.
