Yellow Days

Stream: Go Home - Yellow Days

February 08, 2017 in stream

Coming off the back of his recent EP Harmless Melodies, 17-year-old musician a Yellow Days, real name George van den Broek, is back for more. Packed with baggy reverb and laid back but tripped out vocals, Go Home feels like a half snatched moment of clarity. Sometimes you get it in time, sometimes it sleeps through your fingers.

Discussing the track, van den Broek says:

"It's not so much about a specific story or anything. Maybe just about obsessive love"

Stream: Sooner Or Later - Brasstronaut

February 07, 2017 in stream

This new track from Vancouver six-piece Brasstronic dropped last week but I was stuck in a jetlagged void at the time. Since then it has got nowhere near the attention it deserves, so I'm just going to leave it right here and urge you to hit play.

Think Broken Social Scene, TV On The Radio, Foals and The War On Drugs. Watch out for the self-titled album, due on 24 February.

Phoebe Ryan

Stream: Dark Side - Phoebe Ryan

February 07, 2017 in stream

Phoebe Ryan is back with an exciting new track co-written and produced with Elof Loelv (Rihanna, Icona Pop) and Jason Gill (Tove Lo).

Following on from her recent Chainsmokers collaboration All We Know, Dark Side boasts one of the Ryan's most infectious hooks yet... And I just can't get enough of the heavily distorted melodies that hit in the chorus!

Describing Dark Side, Ryan says "It's about being in love with someone who may not necessarily be the best for you, but you're too deep in it to care".

Pheobe Ryan will be on tour with Tove Lo in the USA through February:

  • February 7 – Portland, OR @ Roseland Theater
  • February 8 – Oakland, CA @ Fox Theater
  • February 10 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Novo
  • February 15 – Minneapolis, MN @ First Avenue
  • February 16 – Chicago, IL @ House Of Blues
  • February 17 – Toronto, ON @ Massey Hall
  • February 19 – Boston, MA @ House Of Blues
  • February 20 – Philadelphia, PA @ The Electric Factory
  • February 22 – New York, NY @ Hammerstein Ballroom
  • February 24 – Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club

Video: I Got You - Seramic

February 03, 2017 in video

Following on from the recent unveiling of his single I Got You, Seramic has just released it’s accompanying video. Not content with just creating the song, Seramic (real name Marcus Foster) also co-directed the video.

Taking synchronised swimming and somewhat flipping it on its head, the majority of the video is shot underwater. The video reverses the visual metaphor of the duck serenely floating whilst it paddles furiously out of sight, albeit with way more grace than that implies.

Describing the video Foster said:

“I wanted to take a sport and highlight its more subtle artistic elements. In this case, I chose synchronised swimming and focussed what happens underneath the water, rather than above the surface.”

The video fits perfectly with the song’s supportive theme:

“[I Got You is about] always having someone's back even if you part ways. It's about being kind even if you lose someone. It plays with your expectations a bit more than some previous tracks, you don't quite know where the song is going, like an out of control lawn mower heading for the children.”

It's a crazy barn storming funk record that feels enjoyably out of control. Check it out:

Stream: This Is How It Starts - Hugh

February 03, 2017 in stream

Everybody thought it couldn’t happen but 2017 has already proven it is a way shittier year than 2016.

Everything may be totally fucked, but hey - at least we have a new track from Hugh and this time it comes with the news that we can expect an album to come later in the year. This Is How It Starts is appropriately the first single from that album.

This Is How It Starts is the sound of the band at their best - contemplative vocals weaving through thick, dubby electronics. Full of the wistful feeling of unrealised potential, Josh and Izzy’s vocals doing that thing they do so well - a perfect aural companionship.
