Chelsea Cutler

Stream: Your Shirt - Chelsea Cutler

March 02, 2017 in stream

Big hooks for your Friday here on this lovely track from Chelsea Cutler. Both writing and producing her own material, Your Shirt is the first track to be lifted from her forthcoming self-written and self-produced debut EP.

Taking a classic quiet-loud-quiet formula and applying it to her soul-pop-EDM sounds, Cutler gently sings through the verses before giving way to the production work on the chorus. It's saccharine but kinda gorgeous: feels, synths and rainbows like a well loved Instagram post.

"I don’t want to miss somebody who’s not missing me, but the city feels so lonely when you leave" sings Cutler, before reaching her insistent mantra "In your shirt that you gave me / I’m half asleep wishing I still had you".

Describing the track, Chelsea says:

"The song is about that moment after a breakup when you wake up in an empty bed and it all hits you that it's really over. I’m excited to lead with it because I think it really represents my growth as an artist from both the writing and the production"

Paperwhite

Stream: Human Nature - Paperwhite

February 16, 2017 in stream

Here comes another stellar track from NYC brother & sister duo Paperwhite. Following on the heels of two well received EPs, Human Nature teases the duo’s forthcoming third EP.

Retaining the band’s trademark dream pop but combining it with a deeper sound and even stronger production, Human Nature feels like a watershed moment for Paperwhite.

Discussing the song the band said:

“Writing for Paperwhite has always been about trying to discover what we stand for… We’ve always written with broad themes in mind. Our first EP, Magic, focused on galactic and ethereal themes and with Escape we brought it down to earth a little bit and spoke of exploring our world. While writing our third EP, we wanted to dive even deeper. These thoughts led us right to our first single, 'Human Nature.' No matter how much we may fight it, we are flawed, we are strong and we are in this together. We are human.”

Ralph

Video: Tease - Ralph

February 15, 2017 in video

Back for the first time on these pages since last August’s lovely Something More, Toronto musician Ralph has just released the video for her latest single Tease.

Coming with the news that we can expect her debut EP on 3 March, Tease is inspired by men that act like they are available when they are actually spoken for. Ralph describes the song as “an 80’s pop tune that confronts an issue but still maintains optimism and energy. (it) condones female friendship instead of competition”.

The video is the output of a collaboration with Ralph’s creative partner Gemma Warren, an organic process that came together the moment Warren first heard the track. “Gemma literally danced in our kitchen the first time she heard Tease and we discussed the treatment from that moment.” Rather than rely on trained dancers since they “preferred the organic movements that each girl brought to the table”.

Check out the video for Tease below.

New Portals

Stream: Stereo - New Portals

February 08, 2017 in stream

Ahead of their debut EP Belfast duo New Portals have just taken the wraps off stellar lead single Stereo and it's a full-on glitter-flecked pop banger.

Switching between hushed vocals and a chorus designed to blow the doors off, Stereo is seriously intense. New Portals have created a sound that takes hip hop rhythms, R&B production and electro synths to create something that sounds like supermarket sweep in a candy shop.

The duo have already been tipped by the Guardians and are set to play SXSW in March. Check out Stereo and expect to hear a lot more soon...

Yellow Days

Stream: Go Home - Yellow Days

February 08, 2017 in stream

Coming off the back of his recent EP Harmless Melodies, 17-year-old musician a Yellow Days, real name George van den Broek, is back for more. Packed with baggy reverb and laid back but tripped out vocals, Go Home feels like a half snatched moment of clarity. Sometimes you get it in time, sometimes it sleeps through your fingers.

Discussing the track, van den Broek says:

"It's not so much about a specific story or anything. Maybe just about obsessive love"
