EP Review: In The Woods - Maxxi Soundsystem
Back on Futureboogie for the first time since his label debut in 2012, Maxxi Soundsystem is well known for his productions and remixes across labels including Defected, Hypercolour, Vellum Audio and Culprit LA.
Near Me is a gently shimmying track featuring deep basslines and lots of space to create the backdrop for vocals from Crazy P's Danielle Moore. There is an understated yet highly atmospheric aesthetic at play, dark synthesizers and multi-layered rhythms creating a near tangible edge to the track.
The Barbarellas version of Near Me is deeper, melancholic synths sewing the seeds of something more sinister whilst Moore's vocals continue to act as the song's gravity.
Finally the EP's title track, In The Woods, is an instrumental house cut that uses rapid-fire breakbeat snare rolls to create a stand-out sense of velocity. The heaving melodies and percussive detail are exactly the kind of thing Maxxi Soundsystem excels at.
In The Woods is released through Futuireboogie on Monday, check out the title track below:
Stream: Keep - I'lls
Fantastic wide-screen alternative electronic music from Melbourne group I'lls (pronounced 'isles'). Keep is a multi-layered track full of skittering beats, ambient melodies and textured instrumentation that evokes Kid A era Radiohead.
Keep is a gloriously developed track, reflecting the range of a band that first emerged back in 2011. This new track is the second single to be lifted from forthcoming EP Can I Go With You To Go Back To My Country, due on 6 July through Solitaire Records. Listen to Keep below:
Video: I Will Wait - Karl Kling
I Will Wait is the new 80s-influenced electro-dream-pop song from Portland-based musician Karl Kling. The accompanying video is inspired by David Lynch and this translates into a surreal, dream--like quality in keeping with the record itself. The deadpan vocal delivery on the verse serves to heighten the impact of the melodic chorus once it hits, and I can't help but love the fuzzy sleepy heart of this record.
I Will Wait is taken from Karl Kling's eponymous debut album, out now via Ghost Beach's Crazy Heart Records. Listen in full-via Spotify below.
Stream: Best On ft. Tei Shi - Luca
Full of short-skirted easy-going summer vibes, Best On is the debut track from Luca, who has recently focused on building a producer platform for artists including Tei Shi. Here Tei Shi provides guest vocals in what Luca hopes will be a template for future collaborations - in his own words:
"I work with a lot of people on helping bring their music to life. Val (Tei Shi) is one of them.” explains Luca, continuing "I made the beat and sent it to Val, she did her thing, and it's become another extension of our collaboration. A first of many I'd like to release with a variety of artists."
Look out for the official release on Luca's own label Garden Party.
