Simple

Premiere: Simple - Main

May 09, 2018 in premiere, stream

Main, the brother of Aaron Maine, lead singer of Porches, and previous bass player for Frankie Cosmos, is a Brooklyn-based electronic indie artist.

Main chose to forge his own path making music that combines 80s synths with dreamlike melodies and smooth R&B rhythms. The result is the soft-groove-like sounds you can hear on Main’s latest track Simple, the first single from Main’s forthcoming debut solo album.

Simple is the tale of a couple who want to keep their simple no-strings relationship - vocals echoing amongst the soft electronics, seemingly reflecting the intangibility of a relationship wrestling against putting down any roots.

There is an easy-going feel here - the music capturing a sense of a love that you don't want to end, but that you fear wouldn't survive the transition into something more grounded. Main's vocals combine with the Simple's melodies and and male-female vocal harmonies feel like a couple trying to figure out just who they are.

Check out Simple below and look out for Main’s debut album this summer.

Ariana And The Rose X RKCB

Love You Lately (Roosevelt Remix)

Stream: Love You Lately (Roosevelt Remix) - Ariana And The Rose X RKCB

May 08, 2018 in stream

Both Ariana And The Rose and Roosevelt have been firm favourites of mine for a while, so it is no surprise that this new remix of Airana’s heartbreaking track Love You Lately by Roosevelt is already one of my favourite tracks from this year.

The original track is a collaboration between Ariana And The Rose and LA R&B/electro duo RKCB and it is the kind of track that just seems a little too heartfelt to exist. Here is a beautiful pop record about the slow disfunction of a relationship in gradual collapse.

Released in partnership with Kitsuné, this remix by Roosevelt adds a warm Mediterranean sun kissed treatment to the track, and turns it into the kind of heartbreaking house record I just can’t resist. The vocals get an appropriate amount of space whilst Roosevelt focuses on adding a slinky beat and a little of his trademark sparkle. It’s both beautiful and devastating at the same time.

Bob Lemon feat. Co-Stanza

Cat & Mouse

Stream: Cat & Mouse - Bob Lemon feat. Co-Stanza

May 06, 2018 in stream

Cat & Mouse is the kind of robotic-funky-shit I can really get behind. Big fat funk bass lines, big crashing rhythms that feel a little Jurassic in nature, lyrics like gunfire. This is a little bit special.

Bob Lemon is apparently an ex professional equestrian... I guess that means he rode horses? Anyway, ultimately Lemon traded his horse for a tuba and the result is the kind of jazz/funk/electro feast you can experience here.

Hailing from a small town outside of Detroit, Cat & Mouse sees Lemon team up with Chicago-based singer-songwriter Co-Stanza, who provides a vocals here that bubble along beneath the surface of this track, a little like bubbles inside a beer glass. The resulting track is great - catchy as hell and so damn funky.

I can neither visually represent Bob Lemon, nor can I represent his jazz/funk/electro noise. So instead I bring you a picture of a horse. This horse is here to remind you of love. Check out Cat & Mouse below.

I See Red

Space

Stream: Space - I See Red

May 04, 2018 in stream

I See Red is an audiovisual band hailing from Sweden and their latest song Space is an epic sounding multi-textural cosmic ballad.

Space is the kind of music that exists somewhere between the mind of James Murphy, David Bowie and Björk, all of whom are name checked by I See Red, but I detect a little Flaming Lips in here too. This is what I call kitchen sink music - everything has been thrown in

The combination of slow, rich and heavy hip-hop style beats, glitchy electronic beeps and huge sweeping orchestral strings give Space an epic feel. It is an aural accompaniment to staring the abyss and coming face-to-face with our own mortality.

Check out Space below and feel the universe get just a little bit bigger:

Stream: Glass - ÅSN and Inga

May 04, 2018 in stream

Glass is a collaboration between two Norwegian, producer ÅSN and singer Inga, and it’s a snappy piece of addictively melodic pop.

With a solid beat and layered production and appropriately crystalline vocals from Inga, this is a little slice of musical determination to move through the turgid reality of your day-to-day. Glass depicts the compromises and complexity that become a reality of long term relationships and how that contrasts to the. sense of relative simplicity experienced in the early days of love.

Check out Glass below:
