Stream: Crash - Shirley Said

Trapped in lazily spun daydreams as summer days slip into short autumnal snatches of sunlight, Crash sounds like a series of fleeting memories drifting on the wind. The things said that ping around inside your head for months and years, distorted by time's gravity but never quite falling to rest on the floor of your mind. I still remember all the moments we shared, even if I can't articulate what happened or how I feel.

There is a fuzzy psychedelia running through Shirley Said's new single. Vocalist Giulia's breathless words scrawling out all your feelings of gently disappointing abandonment. With inspirational cues as varied as Björk, Portishead, Talk Talk, Sonic Youth and David Lynch you can tell that this duo, formerly a four-piece, are not out to deliver anything predictable. Components of techno are fused to shoegaze to make something slow moving and heartbreakingly beautiful.

I played this track three times before I could bring myself to stop it.

Stream: Be Mine - YesYou

Be Mine is the gritty and bluesy latest track from Bisbane duo YesYou.

Opening with the infectious and earthy vocal sample that forms the track's centrepiece, Be Mine is propelled by its clattering fast drum patterns. This track sounds like Play-era Moby meets early Layo & Bushwacka!, sanding down the sharp edges of urban influenced breakbeat to make something that sounds grounded and post-apocalyptic.

Stream: Good Enough - Chelsea Effect

Chelsea Effect is a new musical project from Canadian-born artist Emerald Isabella and Good Enough is the debut release. The track is co-written and produced by Bram Inscore (Beck, Troye Sivan, Twin Shadow) and mixed by Andrew Maury (RAC, Lewis Del Mar).

The Chelsea Effect is named after the legendary Chelsea Hotel in New York City, a hotel that hosted a number of legendary artists, from Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin to Allen Ginsberg and Dylan Thomas. The hotel was covered by the Arthur Millar book, The Chelsea Affect, which covered the impact of the hotel in the 1960s.

Good Enough is a storming alt-pop break-up record, full of layered drums and dreamlike synths. The chorus comes on like a rush of emotionally fuelled anger, intense and focused and pretty damn catchy.

Stream: Skin - Kyla La Grange

Skin is the latest track from London-based alternative pop artist Kyla La Grange. It's a thickly looping slow moving tale of dissatisfaction and addiction, the reverb-heavy vocals exposed and fragile in comparison to the ice-like percussion and heavy bass.

Comparing the new track to her previous single, Kyla says "Skin is the slow burn to So Sweet's happy disco, the morning after the night before ... It's that trapped feeling you get when your brain is stuck on a visual loop and all you can see is the thing that you know you shouldn't be thinking about because it does you no good, but the more you tell yourself not to think about it, the more you do. I wanted to it to feel very close and intimate and sexy and claustrophobic, like you're resisting what you see but at the same time a little twisted part of you is really enjoying it."

Stream: Sunburnt Through The Glass - PREP

Sunburn through glass is actually a rather difficult injury to incur - most of the harmful effects of the sun are filtered out, meaning a standard window provides protection from the sun approximately equivalent to an SPF-30 sun block. This is admittedly incidental, but given the title of their new single it gives you some idea of just how much time new four-piece PREP must have spent in the sun.

Made up of a hip hop producer, a classical composer, a house DJ and a singer songwriter you can only hope that each band member ended up in vaguely the right position in the band. Their credits apparently include Drake, Foxes, Raleigh Ritchie, Eric Prydz, Klangarussell and Sub Focus, which pretty much guarantees you dislike at least one thing they have been involved with.

Regardless of all that, Sunburnt Through The Glass is actually lovely - a deep hit of warming evening sun. It's yacht rock for now (or about three months ago if you live in the Northern hemisphere), inspired by the likes of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and Bobby Caldwell. Check it out above.
