Stream: You Saved Our Lives, We Are Eternally Grateful - Wovoka Gentle

October 14, 2015 in stream

Love this gorgeous new psychedelic folk record from London three-piece Wovoka Gentle, who have just announced the forthcoming release of their new EP Wovoka Gentle EP [Blue] following on from their self-titled debut release earlier in the year.

Formed of twin sisters Imogen and Ellie Mason together with William Stokes, the band's sound manages to sound timeless and without place, a combination of distinctly British folk with Americana, sixties sounds layered into something far more contemporary.

Listen to You Have Saved Our Lives, We Are Eternally Grateful below and look out for Wovoka Gentle EP [Blue] from 27 November on Yucatan Records.

Album Review: Many Colours - Colder

October 13, 2015 in stream, review, album review

It has been so long since Colder last released an album. Ten years have passed since his second album, 2005's Heat. In those years so much has happened that on paper at least it is hard to see how a new album from the French producer, real name Marc Nguyen Tan, could still be relevant... And yet Many Colours slips on like a comfortable favourite outfit - it's like he never went away.

Many Colours - Colder

In part the sense of familiarity imparted by Colder's new material speaks to how ahead of the curve his music was back in 2003 when he first signed to Trevor Jackson's revered Output label. Opening with the ascending distorted bass of the album's title track, Colder quickly paints the aesthetic he is going for. Cool piano keys fall gently as the musician's understated vocals softly monotone a rhythm of their own, and the song sits in a jazz-like state of freeform beauty. It will be familiar to fans of existing Colder material, yet it still sounds modern and fresh.

As an album Many Colours delivers a tonally and thematically consistent experience, from beginning to end it is like a midnight swim outdoors - a deep, dark and sleekly sensual experience. Midnight Fever dares to add a little warmth and femininity to the album, guest vocals from Owlle creating a sultry contrast to Nguyen Tan's deadpan delivery. Elsewhere we experience dark, chugging and sleek mechanical workouts on tracks like Your Kind, which sounds like Junior Boys at their most techno.

With less than 40-minutes of music, Many Colours is a short album, particularly considering how long fans have had to wait for it. Yet each of the nine tracks here are perfectly formed. Closing on the sinister sounding rhymes clicks, snaps and slow piano chords of Silence we are left wanting more even if the closing refrain of "silence is golden" suggests Colder doesn't want to give it to us.

Many Colours is released on 6 November. Listen to album tracks Turn Your Back and Many Colours below.

Stream: Number One - GL

September 30, 2015 in stream

Having first come to my attention last year when they released What Happened To Us? and Take Me Back, Melbourne duo GL are at last back with new track Number One. It's a similarly retro influenced take on forward thinking R&B which draws on late-80s and early-90s pop to create a smooth groove sound full of big drum patterns and layered synths.

Melbourne purveyors of synth-funk, GL are back with all-new single ‘Number One’. The track release follows GL's stand-out performance at Splendour In The Grass in July, where Thompson also joined Mark Ronson onstage as part of his live supergroup. The pair emerged as a highlight of Sydney's OutsideIn Festival earlier this month, and promise to do the same again when they take to the stage at Meredith Music Festival this December. An infectious treat of glowing synths, stratospheric vocals and luxurious neon-lit pop, "Number One" will enchant first time listeners as well as satiate fans of their debut EP ‘Love Hexagon’ in need of a GL fix. Talk / Brag - Philco Fiction

Stream: Talk / Brag - Philco Fiction

September 28, 2015 in stream

Following on from Bodies and June 17 earlier on in the year, Philco Fiction are back with Talk / Brag - the title track from their forthcoming second album.

This new track feels like their most accomplished yet, vocalist Alida's fragile vocals pouring out of her head like the sheer force of gravity would make keeping them in impossible. Layered electronic production creates a timeless cinematic feel - luxurious yet simply played. Simply gorgeous.

Speaking of the track, Alida shared: “'I’m a lover, lover, lover. I’m a force. I’m a mother. And I’m never, never, never gonna let you down - leave you alone.' [With] Talk/Brag, we wanna talk about our place in this world. We wanna brag about our potential as human beings. Tell everyone we are here to love. Tell everyone we want a piece of it. Did someone whisper ‘Airwolf'?

The Talk / Brag album is due out early next year via Killing Moon Records.

Stream: Learn To Fall - Hugh

September 25, 2015 in stream

It has been a little while since we heard from Hugh, the dramatic pop outfit featuring Joshua Idehen whose heart-stopping I Can Be Your Light made it into my top ten songs of the year last year. The four-piece are now back with a new track taken from the forthcoming double A-side Learn To Fall / Almost Done, Almost There.

Learn To Fall is another beautiful duet between Idehen and Izzy Brooks, who both express a powerful level of vulnerability. Learn To Fall feels like a mutual declaration of dependence - when you come to terms with how much you need another person. It's another stunning entry into the band's collection of mature and ambitious pop.

Learn To Fall is available through all major platforms now. Almost Done, Almost There follows on 23 October.

Available to download worldwide across all platforms on Friday 25th September www.hughlovehugh.com
